In 1998, the Director of Volset, Festus and other dedicated community members began sponsoring children to attend school. By 2004, Festus was able to increase the number of children receiving sponsorships with the help of international volunteers. In 2007, Festus and other Volset board members started seeing a problem with the primary schools that received these sponsored children. Too many of these schools were using violence to educate the children. As a result, Volset no longer felt comfortable sending these children to such unhealthy setting and they decided the only solution was to create a school that would facilitate a safer, more progressive learning environment. Future Diplomats Education Centre primary school opened its doors to the children of Volset in 2009.

Kristen, a health education student from America recently interned with Volset. While serving the Ntenjeru community, she saw a great need for a dormitory at the Future Diplomats Education Centre. When orphans are in the homes of caretakers, they are often required to do more physical labor than the other children in the home. This means they rarely have time to dedicate to their schoolwork. All too often, orphans drop out of school to alleviate the burden of balancing school and housework. |
Many of the students who attend Future Diplomats Education Centre live many miles from home. This forces them to walk alone along dangerous roads and through the bush to school early in the morning and again back home in the evening. This puts them at constant risk to get hit by vehicles or abducted along the roads. Kristen and Festus decided the best way to leave the longest lasting impact at the school was to begin a Foundation, named appropriately for the Future Diplomats, whose sole purpose would be to bring in funding for the students at Future Diplomats Education Centre. Future Diplomats Education Centre Foundation will serve orphaned and needy children from the surrounding village communities. Aside from providing a home of safety and security, another key benefit to the construction of the dormitory will be to allow these children to focus on their schoolwork. Most children must bear the responsibilities of returning home after a long day at school to fetch water, gather firewood, or take care of younger siblings which leaves no time for their studies and puts them at risk for dropping out and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
Once the dormitory is constructed, Future Diplomats Education Centre Foundation will strive to bring in sponsorships to the children of Future Diplomats, so that they will no longer sacrifice their educations and futures just because their families cannot afford to send them to school.
